How do I get to your gym?

I'm new to climbing, what can I do to get started?

We offer a variety of options for beginners:

Firstly, you can drop by anytime and try bouldering. The bouldering areas require no reservation and offers terrain for climbers of all abilities. This type of climbing is closer to the ground and doesn't require ropes and harnesses. We provide gymnastic pads for your safety. Bouldering is a great way to learn to climb and develop technique and climbing strength.

Secondly, you can use the auto-belays! Auto-belays only require a quick safety tutorial before using. The auto-belays allow you to climb the higher walls, but you'll only be able to climb where the auto-belays are located. These are a great option if you just want to walk in and check out climbing.

For climbing on ropes we offer a great class option for beginners:

  • The Intro to Climbing Class will teach you how to safely use the ropes. The price includes all gear rentals, a day pass allowing you to climb afterwards. Plus, you get a 10 day membership starting that day!

I’m an experienced climber, what do I need to get started? Do I have to take a belay test?

You must pass a belay test before you can get on ropes. An additional test is required for lead climbing. Belay tests are free and can be done at any time (doesn't need to be scheduled in advance.)

Please note that lead climbers do not need to bring their own rope to use.

What types of climbing are available?

All of our gyms have areas for bouldering, auto-belays, and rope climbing (top-rope and lead.)

Does your gym offer anything besides climbing?

Yes; the gym has fitness areas with aerobic exercise machines and weights. We also host Yoga classes at various times during the week.

I've never climbed in a gym before, what should I wear?

Generally, you want to wear clothes that don't constrict movement and are what you'd be comfortable in while exercising moderately. Climbing isn't an intensely aerobic activity, but you will sweat and you will see a full range of motion. Excessively loose and baggy clothes are NOT recommended; they'll get in the way of your equipment and be uncomfortable under a harness. Skirts and dresses are a bad idea! Also, try to avoid wearing rings and watches because if they get caught in a fall, you can really hurt yourself.

Is climbing dangerous?

Climbing involves inherent risks but we go to great lengths to prevent injury and accidents. It is most dangerous if you ignore the systems and methods designed to keep you safe. Our instructors will teach you to use the gear and to safely make your way around the gym. We adhere to the highest standards of safety and will not let you climb until we're certain you know how to be safe.

CLIMBING IS AN INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS AND DANGEROUS ACTIVITY AND INVOLVES BOTH INHERENT AND EXTRINSIC, AND BOTH NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL RISKS THAT MAY RESULT IN ALL MANNER OF HARM, LOSS, DAMAGE, PROPERTY DAMAGE, SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURIES, OR DEATH TO ME AND/OR OTHERS FROM, FOR EXAMPLE, (a) FALLS FROM THE CLIMBING SURFACE ONTO THE FLOOR, ROCK SURFACE, PROJECTIONS OR OTHER OBJECTS, (b) FALLING ONTO OTHERS PRESENT, (c) CLIMBERS OR OTHER OBJECTS (SUCH AS ROPES, HOLDS OR HARDWARE) FALLING ONTO ME, (d) IMPROPER USE, INSTALLATION OR MAINTENANCE OF GEAR, EQUIPMENT AND/OR APPARATUSES, (e) GEAR AND EQUIPMENT DEFECTS OR MALFUNCTION, (f) FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROPER CLIMBING AND/OR BELAY PROCEDURES, (g) IMPROPER OR INSUFFICIENT TRAINING, SUPERVISION AND/OR INSTRUCTION, (h) ROPE ABRASION AND/OR ENTANGLEMENT, (i) CUTS AND ABRASIONS RESULTING FROM SKIN CONTACT WITH THE CLIMBING WALL, AND (j) FAILURE OF ROPES, SLINGS,BOLTS,CHAINS,CLIMBING HARDWARE, ANCHORPOINTS, OR ANY PART OF THE CLIMBING WALL STRUCTURE.

What does "belay" mean?

Belaying is the way we keep climbers safe from falls by securing the other end of the rope. It uses specialized gear and requires training to master. Sign up for one of our daily Intro classes to learn how to belay.

My friend wants to learn how to climb. Can I teach him/her in your gym?

Unfortunately, our liability insurance requires that only MetroRock instructors teach in our gym. However, our daily Intro class is a great bargain.

I am an adult and I want to climb on ropes with my friend who is new to the sport, can I belay him/her?

Certified belayers are not permitted to belay non-certified climbers. The best option is to sign up for the Intro Class so you can climb on your own with a partner. If you don't have time to do that, you can always climb together on auto-belays or boulder.

Do you have auto-belays?

Yes, we have several auto-belay devices for use by non-certified climbers in our locations. These are a great option for new climbers who don't have time for a class or for experienced climbers who don't have a partner or want to climb laps.

Why must I tie in with a figure 8 follow-through? What's wrong with a bowline, or a figure 9?

As the questions implies, there is no one "best" knot for every situation in climbing. One of the big advantages to a figure-8 follow through is that it is easy to inspect visually to determine if it is correctly tied. The same cannot be said for a bowline or a figure 9. Hence, in order to protect everyone's safety, we require a rewoven figure 8 with a double fisherman backup so that you, your climbing partner, and our staff can easily and reliably visually inspect your tie-in knot.

I'd like to bring my kids to climb, what can they do?

Kids are natural climbers and have a great time in our facilities. They overcome challenges, get exercise and build confidence by reaching the top of climbs. If you want to have your children try climbing on the tall walls with ropes and harnesses, a certified belayer is needed. If you or an accompanying adult is certified, you may belay them. Please note: belaying requires training and you will not pass the belay test if you've never done it before.

If you are not belay certified, kids are welcome to climb on the boulders or use auto-belays under your supervision. Bouldering allows them to climb more frequently than rope climbs and though they don't climb to the same heights, they enjoy conquering the boulder walls as much as rope climbs.

What type of memberships do you offer?

We offer day passes, memberships, and punchcards. Rates vary based on duration, see our rates page for details.

I have a membership at one of your gyms, does it count at the other?

​MetroRock membership holders in non Brooklyn MetroRock gyms, can utilize their memberships in our Brooklyn location up to 4 days per month without incurring any additional charges. Usage beyond the 4 days will require the purchase of a day pass OR that their membership be transferred, at local prices, to our Brooklyn location. For use between other (non Brooklyn) MetroRock locations, members can utilize their memberships without incurring any additional charges.

Punchcards, however are not transferable from one location to the other.

Do you ever offer discounts or specials on memberships or day passes?

Discounted monthly re-occurring memberships are available for students, active duty and veteran military members, and first responders. You must show a valid ID for the respective field to receive the discounted price. We occasionally offer discounts on memberships or punchcards either through the gym or a third party like groupon. Can I get discounts on my health insurance with a MetroRock membership?

Yes, our gyms are full service fitness facilities and we can provide you with the documentation needed to get discounts on health insurance. This only applies when your health plan offers reimbursements. Email us at info@metrorock.com to request documentation.

What is your refund policy for events?

If you need to cancel an event, we offer a full refund if the cancellation occurs 21 days or more before the event. If you are altering your booking within that period, we are happy to offer a credit for use at MetroRock, minus the deposit. We will not offer a refund for no-shows or cancellations within 48 hours before the event.

I want to get on ropes but I don't have a climbing partner, what are my options?

Auto-belays are always available. If you're already at the gym, we have an informal system where you can put your name on a whiteboard located near the water fountain/bathrooms. Check the board for likeminded people and add your own name if necessary.

Otherwise, bouldering is always a very good option. Our boulder areas are usually very social and you're bound to meet fellow climbers if you hang around long enough.

Do you sell climbing gear?

All gyms have gear shops with a selection of clothes, shoes, harnesses, chalk, rope and other hardware. We can get you outfitted for a day in the gym or a weekend at the crag. Unlike at outdoor superstores, all of our staff are experienced climbers who know the gear and what's best for your needs.

Do you have locker rooms?

Our restrooms feature lockers (locks available on a limited basis) and showers.

Do you have WIFI?

We have free WIFI, ask the desk for the password.

What about food and drinks?

We have sitting areas for eating and offer a selection of drinks and snacks for sale. Please eat only at the picnic tables to keep things neat and tidy.

 

What the heck is the Dark Horse Series?

The Dark Horse Bouldering Series is our homegrown bouldering competition and we're proud to say that it's become the premier comp in New England. Starting in the fall, the competition occurs over several events, culminating in the finals held after the New Year! See the official Dark Horse site for more details.
