Advanced Climber (201)

Are your climbing workouts feeling lackluster lately? Do you feel like you have reached a plateau?

The Advanced Climber course is designed to teach you skills necessary to get you to the next level. Many harder climbs require advanced training and technique that are beyond the basics. We will assess your strength, evaluate your technique, and grade your route finding strategy. Our goal is to give you the insight into what it will take for you to climb harder routes.

The scorecard that we will use to assess your climbing fitness and grade your climbing know-how is found below.

Course Details

This course is designed for: 5.7 - 5.9 range
Minimum Age:   Must be at least 14 years old
Max ratio: 4 Climbers : 1 Instructor
Dates: Open, Usually M-F 6:00pm  9:00pm
Instructors have some flexibility with the schedule, but reservations are required!
Equipment Requirements: None
Suggested Prerequisites: 101 or 102
Prices (per climber) $75 per person; course lasts 3 hours

 

Indoor Lead Climber (301)

 Looking for a greater challenge in your climbing visits to the gym? Looking to ratchet up the excitement? Grab the Sharp End of the rope!

The Indoor Lead Climber course will teach you the skills required to safely climb on lead. When you can confidently climb 5.9 and are ready to advance your climbing to next level, this class will give you access to the lead-only routes in the gym and provide a gateway to climbing outside.

The main focus of the class is on basic lead climbing and belaying skills with some discussion on more advanced practices. Students should be prepared to climb and belay during class; climbing shoes, harness and ATC style belay device are required. Rope will be provided.

***Please Note***
Completion of this course will not qualify you to safely and successfully climb lead routes outdoors.

We will teach you:

  • Belaying: how to spot and belay a lead climber
  • Leading: how to climb on the sharp end of the rope safely and efficiently
  • Clipping: how to avoid back clipping and Z-clipping, and how to clip efficiently in a variety of positions
  • Falling and catching a fall: how to safely take a fall and how to provide a soft catch

Learn to Climb (102)

The Learn to Climb course is a comprehensive introduction to indoor climbing. It starts with the same material included in the Basic Top Rope Climber course, but adds technique, supervised climbing practice, and personalized feedback on each student’s climbing skills. We also provide you with the understanding of our grading systems and the different types of climbing that you can do in the gym.

We will teach you:

  • Equipment: how to use a harness and belay device 
  • Knots: tying in with a figure 8 follow-through, plus a fisherman’s backup 
  • Belaying: using a locking carabiner and ATC to confidently keep your climbing partner safe 
  • Commands: how to communicate with your climbing partner 
  • Bouldering: have fun staying close to the ground 
  • Technique: using balance, flexibility, and strength to move up a face 
  • After taking this course, most students can safely pass the MetroRock belay check, necessary to climb in the gym
  • Courses can be arranged outside of normal schedule any day with advance notice, please contact us for scheduling.

    Personal Training

    MetroRock offers one-on-one personal training for those looking to get fit fast.  Our select instructors are experienced at both climbing and fitness training. They can asses your skills, identify your weaknesses and build a training program for you to improve your strength, technique and stamina.

    Fees for one-on-one instruction:

  • Per Hour - $50.00
  • 5 Hour Package - 5% discount - $237.50
  • 10 Hour Package - 10% discount - $450.00
  • Fees for group instruction (limit 4 people):

  • Per Hour - $35.00/person
  • Note - the fees include day pass, gear rental (if necessary), and training time.

    Basic Top Rope Safety (101)

    Are you interested in climbing for the first time? Has it been a while since you have last climbed and are you looking for a refresher? This course is designed for beginners that are looking to take the first steps to get into rock climbing. Our professional staff will walk you through the basics and steps required to get you climbing on the ropes and having a great time.
    We will teach you:

    Prices (per climber): $40, includes gear and day pass. $20 for ladies on Monday, men on Wednesdays and students on Fridays!

    Top Rope Manager (221)

    Ready to start climbing outside on your own, but unsure how to start? Want to learn the skills to be able to confidently take your friends and family out for a day of toproping?

    Our Top Rope Manager Class is an intensive class that will teach you the fundamental concepts of building top rope anchor systems. 

    In this class you will learn:

    • How to use specialized climbing safety equipment such as rope, webbing, carabiners, removable and fixed protection.
    • How to tie specialized climbing knots such as the bowline, clove hitch and the ring bend.
    • How to safely identify and use different anchor points.
    • The basic concepts of a safe top rope anchor system.
    • How to build different top rope anchor systems.

    Location: Local crags located anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour drive from Boston.

    Introduction to Outdoor Climbing (103)

    Let's get outdoors! Our Introduction to Outdoor Climbing Class is a half day class designed specifically for the beginner or first-time climber. You will learn elements of basic safety and different climbing techniques involved with climbing outside.  This class provides all the skills you need to know to pass a belay test in the gym and become Top Rope Belay Certified. This is the equivalent of our Learn to Climb indoor class.

    In this class you will learn:

    • How to use technical climbing equipment such as a harness and belay device.
    • How to connect yourself to a climbing rope via the trace-8 and double fisherman's knot.
    • How to belay to keep your climbing partner safe.
    • How to give commands to communicate with your climbing partner.
    • Basic climbing technique: using balance, flexibility, and strength to move up the rock face.

    Location: Local crags located anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour drive from Boston.

    Granite Girls Climbing School

    Training for Women, by Women.

    Overview
    • The training will target female specific weaknesses in a secure female friendly environment over a 4 or 8 week span, while introducing workouts and exercises that target specific systems.
    • Each session will meet once a week for two hours.

    Objectives
    Help each climber to become stronger, more confident, and more technically advanced. Each week new activities will be introduced to accomplish these goals with direct focus on: Technique, Route Reading/ Resting/ Projecting, Power, Power Endurance, Endurance, and Contact strength/Lock -offs.

    Payment:
    Payment will be taken upon first day of practice, check only. The check can be made out to Metro Rock.

    Bouldering Series:
    Beginner: V0-V2
    • Mondays: 4/28-6/23 6:30-8:30 PM
    • NO PRACTICE MEMORIAL DAY
    Intermediate/Advanced: V3-V7
    • Sundays: 9:30-11:30 AM (4/27-6/29)
    • NO PRACTICE 6/15,5/25

    Rope Series:
    Beginner: 5.5-5.9 and Intermediate/Advanced (5.10-5.12) meet on the same day
    • Wednesdays: 7-9 pm (4/30-6/18)
