Parkour Workshop

This workshop, led by instructors from Parkour Generations Americas, will introduce participants to the basic techniques and training of parkour/l’art du déplacement/freerunning. Over the course of 11 weeks, students will learn to move like a traceur through a series of drills, exercises and demonstrations. There will also be a strong emphasis on “having fun with movement” and the fluid and confident exploration of one’s environment.

Though open to participants of all skill and fitness levels, there will be special attention paid to beginners wishing to learn more about parkour in a safe and comfortable environment. Students should expect a variety exercises and challenges designed to push mental and physical capabilities while also learning to use and move their bodies in unexpected ways.

What is Parkour? Parkour was born in the banlieues (suburbs) of Paris in the 1980s and is now one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. While often recognized in the fantastic images seen on YouTube or television, the sport is actually a form of movement that has roots in a wide variety of physical disciplines including gymnastics, martial arts, climbing, and track & field. Practitioners, known as traceurs, train to develop strength, speed, endurance, precision, spatial awareness, dynamism, and creativity, in order to be as fluid, functional and liberated as possible in physical movement and to overcome physical obstacles. Traceurs also develop a way of thinking based on rigorous self-discipline, autonomous action and self-will that allows them to overcome mental obstacles related to their movements.

Registration is open throughout the season and drop-ins are always welcome. MetroRock members receive a discount.
