Basic Safety
Learn the basic elements of climbing safety, including:
- Equipment: how to use a harness and belay device
- Knots: tying in with a figure 8 follow-through, plus a fisherman’s backup
- Belaying: using a locking carabiner and ATC to confidently keep your climbing partner safe
- Commands: how to communicate with your climbing partner
After taking this course, most students can safely pass the MetroRock belay check, necessary
to climb in the gym.
For a more thorough introduction to climbing, check out our Learn to Climb course.
When: The Basic Safety Course is taught weeknights from 7:30-9:00 pm (allow time before the course
to register, sign a waiver, etc.)
Reservations: are always suggested, and are required for groups of 4 or more. Walk-ins
are accommodated on a space-available basis: if there's room in the class then you're in luck.
However, the best way to make sure you have a spot in the class
is to make a reservation, and to be fair to everyone, we have to limit class size.
Cost: $40. Includes admission to the gym and gear on the day of the course.
