Welcome to the MetroRock Climbing School!

Climbing Instruction and guidingExperience the thrill of climbing outdoors!!!

Our comprehensive outdoor courses range from top rope to sport to trad and ice climbing. With an intimate staff-to-participant ratio, we offer the best level of instruction. Whether you want to learn how to build secure top rope anchors or how to set up a haul system for rescue, our instructors will patiently guide you through your learning journey!

Not only do we specialize in climbing instruction, we offer wonderful, guided climbing experiences too!  We can take you anywhere you want to go!

Our outdoor climbing instructors are some of the best in New England. Our dedicated staff are AMGA (American Mountain Guide Association) Single Pitch Instructor certified. From the Quincy Quarries and Den Rock to Pawtuckaway and Rumney we climb at the best crags in the area! 

Our 2012 season is under way. See the options below for open enrollment dates or contact us to set up a private class to match your needs. We can easily tailor our instruction to your needs and abilities.

Trad Climber (421)

If you are passionate about growing your climbing ability and want to lead traditional routes then this course is a must.Traditional climbing offers limitless potential for climbing locally or around the world. This 2 Day Course will include the instruction and practical application necessary to take the first steps in the Traditional Climbing world. 

We will teach you:

  • Proper Lead Technique
  • Placing Gear
  • Setting Anchors
  • Safety Instruction and Hazard Evaluation
  • Route Finding

Sport Climber (303)

Ready to take those lead climbing skills outside? This full day class will teach you everything you need to know about sport climbing safely outdoors!

In this class you will learn:

  • About fixed anchros and how they work
  • How to equip a sport climb
  • How to safely clean a sport climb
  • Risk analysis for outdoor lead climbing
  • Sport climbing tricks such as speedy anchor cleaning and stick-clipping

Location: Rumney Rocks near Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Ice Climber (203)

 

Let's go climb some ICE! The Ice Climber class is a full one-day class designed for climbers with some experience (either indoors or outdoors) to come experience the thrill of climbing frozen water! Never climbed outside before? Great! Use this class as a great way to experience outdoor climbing for the first time! Looking to improve your ice climbing technique? Come join us! Our instructors will help you hone those ice climbing skills!

In this class you will learn:

  • How to use ice climbing equipment
  • Safe Climbing
  • Movement and Technique

Locations: Depending on conditions, we will meet at one of several great ice climbing crags in Southern New Hampshire and the White Mountains. Dress in warm layers!

Top Rope Manager (221)

 

Want to start climbing outside on your own? Our Top Rope Manager Class is an intensive class teaching you the concepts of building top rope anchor systems. 

In this class you will learn:

  • How to use specialized climbing safety equipment such as rope, webbing, carabiners, removable and fixed protection.
  • How to tie specialized climbing knots such as the bowline, clove hitch and the ring bend.
  • How to safely identify and use different anchor points.
  • The basic concepts of a safe top rope anchor system.
  • How to build different top rope anchor systems.

Location: Local crags located anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour drive from Boston.

Outdoor Climber (121)

Let's get outdoors! Our Outdoor Climber Class is a half day class designed to get climbers from the gym to the outdoor world of climbing with our professional staff to local top rope destinations. We want to make your transition from climbing indoors to outdoors an eye-opening experience that will get you hooked. This is your chance to hone your climbing skills on real rock and gain some real confidence and experience outside of the gym environment!  This class will provide you with the skills to move on to our Top Rope Manager Class. 


In this class you will learn:

  • How to refine your outdoor belaying skills. 
  • How to improve your communication skills at the crag.
  • How to refine your basic outdoor climbing technique.
  • Advanced outdoor climbing techniques such as crack climbing and bouldering.

Location: Local crags located anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour drive from Boston.

Introduction to Outdoor Climbing (103)

Let's get outdoors! Our Introduction to Outdoor Climbing Class is a half day class designed specifically for the beginner or first-time climber. You will learn elements of basic safety and different climbing techniques involved with climbing outside.  This class provides all the skills you need to know to pass a belay test in the gym and become Top Rope Belay Certified. This is the equivalent of our Learn to Climb indoor class.

In this class you will learn:

  • How to use technical climbing equipment such as a harness and belay device.
  • How to connect yourself to a climbing rope via the trace-8 and double fisherman's knot.
  • How to belay to keep your climbing partner safe.
  • How to give commands to communicate with your climbing partner.
  • Basic climbing technique: using balance, flexibility, and strength to move up the rock face.
