Introductory Classes

Basic Top Rope Safety (101)

Are you interested in climbing for the first time? Has it been a while since you have last climbed and are you looking for a refresher? This course is designed for beginners that are looking to take the first steps to get into rock climbing. Our professional staff will walk you through the basics and steps required to get you climbing on the ropes and having a great time. We will teach you:

  • Equipment: how to use a harness and belay device
  • Knots: tying in with a figure 8 follow-through, plus a fisherman's backup
  • Belaying: using a locking carabiner and ATC to confidently keep your climbing partner safe
  • Commands: how to communicate with your climbing partner
  • After taking this course, most students can safely pass the MetroRock belay check, necessary to climb in the gym

You'll be will get to climb while being supervised and will be able to climb on your own for the rest of the day after your class.

Courses can be arranged outside of the normal schedule any day with advance notice. Please contact us for scheduling.

This course is designed for:Beginners new to climbing
Minimum Age:Must be at least 14 years old
Max ratio: 6 Climbers : 1 Instructor
Dates:Weekdays 7:30-9pm Weekends 12:30 - 2pm
Equipment Requirements:None
Suggested Prerequisites:None
Prices (per climber):$40, includes gear and day pass. $20 for ladies on Monday and students on Fridays!

Learn to Climb (102)

The Learn to Climb course is a comprehensive introduction to indoor climbing. It starts with the same material included in the Basic Top Rope Climber course, but adds technique, supervised climbing practice, and personalized feedback on each student’s climbing skills. We also provide you with the understanding of our grading systems and the different types of climbing that you can do in the gym. We will teach you:

  • Equipment: how to use a harness and belay device 
  • Knots: tying in with a figure 8 follow-through, plus a fisherman’s backup 
  • Belaying: using a locking carabiner and ATC to confidently keep your climbing partner safe 
  • Commands: how to communicate with your climbing partner 
  • Bouldering: have fun staying close to the ground 
  • Technique: using balance, flexibility, and strength to move up a face 
  • After taking this course, most students can safely pass the MetroRock belay check, necessary to climb in the gym

Introduction to Outdoor Climbing (103)

Our Introduction to Outdoor Climbing Class is a half day class designed specifically for the beginner or first-time climber. You will learn elements of basic safety and different climbing techniques involved with climbing outside. This class provides all the skills you need to know to pass a belay test in the gym and become Top Rope Belay Certified. This is the equivalent of our Learn to Climb (102) indoor class.

In this class you will learn:

  • How to use technical climbing equipment such as a harness and belay device.
  • How to connect yourself to a climbing rope via the trace-8 and double fisherman's knot.
  • How to belay to keep your climbing partner safe.
  • How to give commands to communicate with your climbing partner.
  • Basic climbing technique: using balance, flexibility, and strength to move up the rock face.

Location: Local crags located anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour drive from Boston.
