The Petzl GRIGRI 2 Recall--What you need to know
As you may have heard, Petzl has issued a recall for a large number of the GRIGRI 2s that were released earlier this year. The recall has been made to address a potential fault with the brake.
This device has been for sale at both MetroRock locations. As soon as we heard about the issue, we pulled the product from our gear shops. We cannot say for certain if we sold any of the GRIGRI 2s in question but chances are we have.
We understand there are a lot of questions out there regarding the recall. We’d like to help you get the information you need.
First off, here’s Petzl’s official site with the information you need for technical specs and information on getting yours replaced. It’s very thorough and you can submit a question to them directly if you can’t find what you need.
To help sort through all the details, we’ve summarized the information for you in an FAQ format:
Are all GRIGRI 2s being recalled? What about the original?
The original GRIGRI is still fine to use. Not all GRIGRI 2s are affected, you need to check your serial number to find out.
How do I know if mine needs to be returned?
Those GRIGRI 2s with the first 5 digits of the serial number falling between 10326 and 11136 have the potential to fail. The range of serial numbers includes all colors. You can find the serial number here:
How is it defective?
The defect may occur when the auto brake is disengaged using excessive force. This could damage the handle and the brake may get stuck in the open position. At this point, the GRIGRI functions like a tubular belay device—it will still provide a safe brake provided you keep your hand on the brake rope at all times.
How many are affected?
Petzl reports that so far, they have received notice that 7 out of about 40,000 units have had this happen. Though you may not consider that a large percentage, from a safety standard point of view, it is significant and given that not all potential defects have occurred yet, that number would likely get a lot higher.
What is Petzl doing to improve the design?
All GRIGRI 2s with the serial number higher than 11136 will have a reinforced handle to fix the problem. You can tell this version from the earlier ones by either checking the serial number or looking for a green dot that Petzl will use to mark the new ones for easy reference.
What will Petzl do to fix this?
If you send your affected GRIGRI 2 to Petzl, they will send a replacement from the improved design batch and redeem your shipping costs. However, they will not let you change colors or replace the original GRIGRI or those that aren't from the affected batch.
How do I get a new one?
To get a new one, send it to the Petzl distribution center in your country. For US and Canada residents, you can use this online form or mailto:GRIGRI2recall@petzl.com, 1 (800) 932-2978, contact them for details. See the webpage for other areas.
PLEASE NOTE: You cannot get your GRIGRI 2, if it is in the affected range of serial numbers, replaced at the point of purchase.
